Participant Preparation
So you are scheduled for a Challenge experience. We endeavor to provide fun learning experiences to attain your group's goals. Here are some items to prepare you for the optimum program and outcomes.
Fitness
Everyone can participate in challenge activities. Success is based on the assets of your group, not individual physical prowess.
We strongly encourage you to consult a physician before participating in challenge or other physical activities. Some potential conditions that may affect your participation are: recent or recurring injuries, recent medical procedures, diabetes, seizures, asthma, allergies, and heart conditions. Activities may involve running, lifting, bending, balancing, and climbing. Activities and participation can be modified for all levels of fitness. Please bring emergency medication for the above conditions.
Safety
Safety is our primary concern. We are concerned with all aspects of who you are including physical, emotional and social safety. Our staff is trained to continually assess the safety of your group and modify, delay or cancel activities before they become unsafe.
All activities have safety procedures to prevent injuries. You are responsible for making decisions about how you participate in any given activity. You may choose to observe, lead, provide safety, lift, or be lifted. These are all essential forms of participation in a group.
Challenge Zones
The whole purpose of a challenge experience is to learn or grow through activities. Try to step out of your comfort zone at least twice or more during your Challenge experience.
Comfort Zone - In the comfort zone you feel safe and reserve or gather energy for growth.
Learning/Growth Zone - Here you are stretching your bounds, doing something new or not comfortable, and growing or learning.
Panic/Shutdown Zone - This is the place to avoid. Here you are beyond rational safety or have shutdown the ability to learn and grow by going too far.
How to Shape Your Experience
Talk with your group organizer early about what you see as group assets and deficits. Some topics may include: balancing outcomes and procedures, planning, decision making, consensus building, implementation, giving and receiving feedback, and communication. Once you arrive speak up and be honest with your group; your unique perspective could be the one that helps the group break through a barrier.
How to Prepare
Before you arrive - You need to be at your best physically and mentally. Sleep and eat well before you arrive. If you are coming in the middle of the day, be sure to eat something nutritious close to the start time. For maximum outcomes be mentally prepared with a positive attitude and a willingness to change.
What to bring - Bring a snack and water bottle as a minimum. You may also want to bring extra clothing, shoes, and rain protection in case the weather changes.
What to wear - You must wear shoes that encase your entire foot, no exceptions. Wear clothing that is comfortable to move in and covers your body.
Alcohol/Drugs/Tobacco
Safety prohibits individuals under the influence of drugs or alcohol from participating in the Challenge Program. The use of tobacco products during programming is not permitted. Longer programs may include breaks that may permit tobacco use in accordance with Washington State Law.
