FAQ

FAQ

Can I just sign up by myself or do I need to be in a student group?

There are a few opportunities a term to experience high activities by yourself: Demo Week, Stress Breaks, and other special events. You may form your own student group with friends to participate in low and high challenge activities.

Can we coordinate a special adventure program for our group?

We can customize an experienital workshop or outdoor adventure just for your group! We call it UREC For You. Perfect  for residence halls, fraternities/sororities, RSO's, academic classes, and other organized groups, please contact Jonathan Stahl at jmstahl@wsu.edu with at least four weeks' notice to coordinate your customized UREC for You Adventure Program. Minimum of 5 participants required. Click here for ideas.

Do we have to go up high?

The foundations of Challenge are a group contract focusing on providing a safe environment and developing the concept of individual choice. Each participant chooses what level or role to participate in each and every activity. Even if you were to not choose to go up on the high course there are many important support roles to assist the group in having the best experience possible.

How do I sign up?

First, go to the Challenge website and review the scheduling information page. Then contact the UREC and discuss your goals and needs of your group with the Challenge Program Staff. Then you can reserve a date. Initial contact needs to be with at least two weeks notice, and be aware that the popular dates book up to six months in advance.

How many people do I need?

We need a minimum of six people to meet the safety requirements for most activities. If less than six people show up we may cancel your contract. Realize though, that to cover facilitator costs, there is a minimum fee equal to the price of ten participants.

We can comfortablyhandle up to fifty participants at a time on the challenge course. It is possible to handle larger groups in shifts.

Larger groups can be accomodated with portable activities in another facility such as Valley Road Field.

How much does it cost?

The cost for a Challenge Program varies depending on the size of your group, the length and levels of participation. Contact the Challenge Program to discuss the needs and goals of your group and the cost can be assessed.

I don't like being touched, should I just not come?

Each person chooses how they participate in activities. If an activity includes touch you may choose to be the communicator, the problem solver, or a safety monitor. Challenge consists of many activities that vary in intensity level, some are at ground level and physical contact will be incidental. You may have situation where you bump into each other or touch a shoulder for balance.

What do we do if it snows?

"There is no bad weather; just bad clothing" -Scandinavian Proverb

Fortunately, the Student Recreation Center has ample space for large-groups. Therefore, if the weather is really adverse, we always have the option to move indoors for (part of) the day. Often, a group will decide to do the team activities inside and go outside for two hours or so for a high activity.

In case of inclement weather, we also have the option to reschedule part of your day, or to provide you with a refund of (a
portion of) your program fees.

What if I am out of shape?

All challenge activities are adaptable to diverse physical abilities. The foundations of Challenge are a group contract focusing on providing a safe environment and developing the concept of individual choice. Challenge Programs are custom designed to meet your specific needs and goals.
